Another bonus to the lower montly premiums is investing what you would have been spending on a high monthly premium, earning cash for later use (should it be needed for healthcare) rather than letting the insurance companies invest your money to fill their already-inflated coffers.

Thanks for the coverage of this topic Brian. I almost felt like I was reading a Clark Howard article. This is great information. Fortunately, I have a good coverage where I work now (around $175 less than privatized PPO through BSBCGA,) but once I make the move to start my own business or consult, I will utilize this to the full extent.

The IGDA could do so much more, but it has a significant identity crisis. I don't see them becoming relevant other than as a publisher of general white papers that cause turmoil for a month or two then blow over.

I have been wondering about this issue myself. It would be great if the IGDA would allow members to buy in on the same health plan that they offer to employees, unsubsidized of course. I've been meaning to write to Jason DeLaRoca to that effect. There is an association in NYC for freelance writers (http://www.mediabistro.com/) that provides group health care in NYC for its members and I imagine that similar things must exist or be possible elsewhere.
