Introduction: Matthew Whiting

After only a short time in the industry, I was lucky enough to land a job with one of the finest organizations in the buisness, a small company called Insomniac Games. They had a small but incredibly talented group of people, and I learned a lot about how to do things “the right way” there.

After that, I moved on to another small game company, Luxoflux. With another small team of talented people, we put together Shrek2 (an effort I was very proud of). As a manager now, I learned how difficult it could be to hire people as capable as I was used to working with, and that lesson is a key part of my new business strategy.

After Shrek2, market forces led to the dubious decision to combine all the resources of Luxoflux (and pull in resources from several other companies as well) into a single, gargantuan effort for TrueCrime2. From that experience, I learned two important things.

First, large teams are extremely inefficient, unmanageable, and unproductive.

Second, it was time to make my own decisions about what projects to work on.

So along with my partner, Gavin Dodd (a former co-worker from Insomniac), we decided to start up our own small company Wholesale Algorithms - not to make our own games, but to make the decisions about what projects we would take.

We’re just getting started, but we’ll keep you posted on how things turn out.
